According to Wikipedia, RSS (most commonly translated as “Really Simple Syndication” but sometimes “Rich Site Summary”) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works, such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video in a standardized format.

An RSS document (which is called a “feed”, “web feed”, or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an “RSS reader“.

Reseting WordPress Password

Today I faced very interesting problem with WordPress, actually I may not blame WordPress for all what happened to me today. I was reading about WordPress Attack Under Way so I decided to update all of my blogs. Updating was done smoothly, Unfortunately I forgot username/password and also contact email, so there was absolutely no way to reset the password as the resting option only work if you remember either user name or email address. I tried my level best to find a solution I did lot of searching but at last I found a way of changing both password and email address.

If you remember either User name or Email Address then you can easily reset it from wp-admin page.

On clicking Lost Your Password you will be taken to page asking you to enter user name or email address to reset your password, But what if you forgot both user name/email address as it was the case happened with me. Don’t worry I will tell you how to recover your password.

Follow the following steps.

Once Logged in to Cpanel, Go to PhpMyAdmin.

Select the Database of WordPress blog for which you want password to be reset.

Locate the wp_users table (normally the last row), and then click on the Browse icon under Action column on the same line.

Locate the user_login which the password want to be recovered and reset, and then click on the Edit button in front of the line.

Under the user_pass field, delete everything in the corresponding Value field on the same line.

Enter a new desired password (case sensitive) in the now empty Value text box, i.e. NEW PASSWORD in the illustration.

Select MD5 in the Function field drop-down menu.

Click on Go button to save and reset the password.

Wordpress 2.7.1 released

Today wordpress.org announced availability of Wordpress 2.7.1, first maintenance release of Wordpress 2.7. It has 68 bug fixes found in previous release.

How can you upgrade

With earlier release i.e Wordpress 2.7, upgrade process had been made quite easy, all you have to do is to go to Tools > Upgrade and click Upgrade Automatically and you’re done. It will take few minutes to download and install the new version to your server.
Alternatively if you have an older version than 2.7 or there is some problem with upgrading automatically, than it is better to upgrade manually. Download the latest version from here & extract it. Open your ftp client and connect to your hosting server. Overwrite all Wordpress files with new ones. That’s it.

Get rid of curly quotes in your blog posts

I really hate these ugly curly quotes whether they are in a web page or desktop applications. Specially if there is some code provided in your blog post, they are really headache. This hack over wp-recipes.com get rid of curly quotes with few lines of code.

Author comments highlighting

You are a blog author, you deserve special treatment, at least at your own blog. Highlighting author comment is a nice idea to differentiate between author and reader comments. You can see it in action within my blog comments.

Author info in every blog post

This trick is specially effective for multi-author blog. Readers will not be confused with post writer.

Wordpress: How to create a clean archives page

From the very first day when I started this blog, I was thinking of creating a nice archives page template manually. But unfortunately I didn’t get time since than. So, my blog had not archives page until I came through SRG Clean Archives plugin for Wordpress. I downloaded and activated this plugin, and I created a nice archives page in no time. All I have to do was to create a page which I named ‘Archives‘ and put this code it to the editor:

How to fix PNG transparency problem in Wordpress

Internet Explorer 6(IE6) may be the worst browser ever made. Softwares are called solutions for computing problems, but I don’t know how to name IE6, since it is a problem more than a solution. It has a long history of bugs but despite its poor performance till the date it occupies a large part of browsers market.
Apart from box model problems, there is PNG transparency handling issue with IE6. Developers have to write there own hacks to overcome this problem.
If you are designing/developing a Wordpress theme that would use transparent PNGs, you might run in to trouble with IE6. But fortunately there is a simple solution for this problem. There is a plugin name WP-UnitPNGfix which after activation, fix the PNG problem in IE6 for your blog regardless which theme you use.

I use a lot of transparent PNGs in my current blog theme, means trouble for me in IE6 but this plugin worked like a charm for me. Despite its compatibility till Wordpress 2.6, it can work fine with 2.7 as well. You can download this plugin here. Unzip and upload it to your wp-content/plugins folder and activate it from ‘Plugins’ in your dashboard. No more changes you have to do in CSS nor PHP files. Please note if you are considering your theme for public release & it has this issue, you must provide some manual solution along theme files. Google for “IE PNG fix“, and you will find many manual workarounds.

Previously we were familiar only with some videos from Wordpress guys containing a visual introduction of Wordpress versions announced at that time.

Wordpress: How to remove Page forbidden error while updating general options

Recently I had a new Wordpress installation over a new domain. Everything went fine except an option page error. While updating General Options I got the my dashboard page redirected to my blog front end & gave me a Page not found error. Searching through Wordpress forums, I came through this solution. It’s easy to remove this error by updating your .htaccess file. Open you .htaccess file and put these line to the end:
SecFilterEngine Off SecFilterScanPOST Off
Save & upload your .htaccess & try to update your general options page now.

4 features I like about Wordpress 2.7 Dashboard homepage

The image above has all 4 features that I love about Wordpress 2.7 dashboard homepage, highlighted respectively. Fortunately all of these are present side by site. Lets talk about there functionality:

This nice little enhancement in Wordpress 2.7 is what I dreamed for months(if not years ). Finally I have control over my page modules, most of which I don’t need most of the times. So, its easy for me to remove unwanted modules just by un-checking the respective box. I feel happy for more room to work. Even I don’t like extra panels in Adobe Photoshop when I am working there.

Drop down menu:

Using earlier Wordpress versions, It was really annoying for me to post a Page by clicking New in top menu & in the next page(which was in fact new Post page), I had to click Page in order to get there. This drop down menu cures that headache and now I have one click access to the most accessed tasks in Wordpress.

At a glance:

Being a UI enthusiast I love better presentation for even minor things. Same is the case with this enhanced blog stats widget. There are significant UI improvements in this particular Wordpress version but this stats widget really amazed me.

QuickPress

: It was first sight love for me, though I came to know later that it was orginally a wordpress plugin now plugged right in Dashboard homepage. The only thing I hate about Wordpress editor is to wait for Post editor page to to load(even if WYSIWYG turned off) and with QuickPress I can make quick post without waiting that long.
