Being a customer of Ufone (Mobile Cellular Company) I came to know through advertisement that they have launched Ufone Smart Code Service, the service basically is used to transfer Balance using easy load with out telling your number to any one, actually Ufone give you a smart code which is to be used while transferring balance via easy load. PTCL introduces wireless broadband service: PTCL EVDO

We heard of it long ago and finally it is here. For those who don’t know about it, PTCL EVDO is the wireless broadband service by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited(PTCL), the largest voice and data network of Pakistan. Though it is not launched officially but it is available for friendly user trials(FUT) via PTCL Corporate Customer Care (CCC) Centers or One Stop Shops (OSS) in Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore.

What is EVDO?

Evolution-Data Optimized or Evolution-Data only, abbreviated as EV-DO or EVDO and often EV, is a telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. It uses multiplexing techniques including Code division multiple access (CDMA) as well as Time division multiple access (TDMA) to maximize both individual user’s throughput and the overall system throughput. It is standardized by 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) as part of the CDMA2000 family of standards and has been adopted by many mobile phone service providers around the world – particularly those previously employing CDMA networks. It is also used on the Globalstar satellite phone network.

PTCL is using CDMA EVDO Rev.A technology, which means speed can go up to 3.1Mbps.

What is the Tariff?

If we check through the official PTCL EVDO page we get no clue about tariff. Most possible reason is that it is not yet officially launched. However contacting there Islamabad CCC, I came to know that it is a shared broadband service for Rs.2500/month and speed can vary depending on location and number of customers using PTCL EVDO in a particular area. Additionally the EVDO card only works with laptops since it fits in PCMCIA slot. The site also states that USB EVDO cards would be available soon, means one can use it on a PC too.
Personally I guess this service will be yet another huge success for PTCL after their Broadband Pakistan service. I am not sure about the set up required to provide EVDO service. If it is not that much complicated, PTCL can widen its broadband services to rural areas. Even my native villagers are starving for a broadband service.

Your facebook profile in pirates language

Pirates of Caribbean is one of my favourite movie of all time. It has every character different from other but one thing common among them was there special Pirate’s language. I wonder if pirates today speak such a language. However, if you want to see that your facebook profile speak such language, you have to follow these steps:

Click “Settings” in the top navigation bar.
Click “Language” tab on the next page.
Select “English(Pirate) – Beta” from the drop down menu.
You’re done, can check the pirate’s language as the settings are applied:

Configure POP3 & SMTP server settings for Windows Live Hotmail

Few weeks back Hotmail finally allowed its free users to use POP3 technology. Though it is limited to few countries(United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy & Holland), but they have plan to extend it to all users around the world towards the end of 2009. Recent failure against competitors specially gmail forced Hotmail to allow this facility for free users. Previously only premium users of Hotmail Plus were able to use POP3. Here are the POP3 and SMTP server settings for your Hotmail account:

POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes

Though there are 100s of Firefox themes to choose from, but a lot of theme developers haven’t updated there themes to be compatible with this new Firefox version. However, there are still some beautiful themes that are updated and compatible with Firefox3. I have complied a small list of some beautiful themes for Firefox3:

VOA Urdu opted for Nastaleeq Urdu font

Voice of America(VOA) is one of the largest International broadcasting service of the world. It has an estimated 134 million audience worldwide. So, naturally there web presence get more attention than any other ordinary news site. It’s British counterpart BBC is on top among all Broadcasting services in terms of radio & web audience.. VOA speaks about 45 languages to present its new service on radio & internet.

Here in Pakistan VOA Radio is 2nd popular service after BBC radio. If we rank Urdu news sites in Pakistan, VOA Urdu comes after BBC Urdu & Jang Online. News sites are quite popular among Pakistan internet population. So, lower in ranks doesn’t mean VOA Urdu is totally out of competition.
Getting back to the topic, earlier VOA Urdu was using Urdu Naskh Asiatype as primary font for their site. Orignally Urdu Naskh Asiatype was developed by Liwal Software for BBCurdu.com. “Naskh” style is basically for Arabic while Urdu has its own writing style called “Nastaleeq“. Few months back it was only a dream to use a Nastaleeq font that can work equally fine on all Operating Systems as well all browsers. But thanks to Alvi Amjid who developed and released a font called “Alvi Nastaleeq” towards the end of 2008.

Recently VOA Urdu dropped Naskh font and opted for Alvi Nastaleeq. It is a giant step keeping in view issue related to font size & copyrights of this particular font. But one thing for sure is, now their web site seems a lot better and “Urdu-ish” after adopting this font(see screenshot above). This step is a huge success for volunteers that are working for development of Urdu.

Wordpress has now its own TV

Today Matt Mullenweg(founder of Wordpress blogging/CMS platform) announced Wordpress.tv, a visual resource for all things Wordpress at official Wordpress blog. Previously we were familiar only with some videos from Wordpress guys containing a visual introduction of Wordpress versions announced at that time.

According to Wordpress.tv official blog:
