If iPhone doesn’t appear in iTunes or you can’t sync iPhone

The iPhone battery might need to be recharged. For information about charging iPhone, see “Charging the Battery” in the iPhone User’s Guide.

If that doesn’t work, disconnect other USB devices from your computer and connect iPhone to a different USB 2.0 port on your computer (not on your keyboard).

If that doesn’t work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: If you enter the SIM PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.

If that doesn’t work, restart your computer and reconnect iPhone to your computer.

If that doesn’t work, download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes.

If you can’t make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access email or the web

Check the cell signal indicator in the status bar at the top of the screen. If there are no bars, or if it says “No service,” try moving to a different location. If you’re indoors, try going outdoors or moving closer to a window.

Check to make sure you’re in an area with network coverage. Go to your carrier’s website to see network coverage areas.

Make sure airplane mode isn’t on. From the Home screen choose Settings, then turn Airplane Mode off.

If that doesn’t work, turn airplane mode on, wait 15 seconds, then turn airplane mode off again.

Make sure to include an area code for every phone number in your contacts list that you use to send or receive text messages.

If that doesn’t work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If that doesn’t work, there may be an issue with your wireless service. Call your carrier or go to your carrier’s website.

If that doesn’t work, restore the iPhone software.

MMS: Original iPhone does not support MMS. MMS is available on iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS if it is supported by the wireless carrier.

If that doesn’t work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If iPhone continues to freeze or not respond after you reset it

One of the most commonly asked questions by iPhone users who want to jailbreak their iPhone is:
“Is possible to recover if things go wrong?

Yes you can

Please note the step-by-step guide involves restoring your iPhone so you should be aware this would mean that all your personal data from your iPhone, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data will be wiped out and your iPhone’s settings will be restored to their factory settings. However, you always have the option to recover your personal data from the backup.

Here is the step-by-step guide to restore your jailbroken iPhone:

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If things had gone horribly wrong while hacking your iPhone and iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
2. You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode
(this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone)
Connect your iPhone to your computer.
3. Turn iPhone off.
4. Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps
(observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized. A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone. In the Summary Tab, click on the Restore button.

iTunes should prompt you if you would wish to take a backup of your iPhone before restoring. Select Backup.

After the backup is taken select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you.

Once the restore process has completed your iPhone will restart and the Apple logo will appear while booting up.

After the restore is complete and your iPhone restarts you will see the “Connect to Activate” screen. You must continue to keep your iPhone connected to complete activation.

The last step is to set up your iPhone either from a backup or set up as a “new iPhone”. Setup your iPhone as a “new iPhone” or you can select the date of your backup that you want to restore from. You can always follow the above procedure to restore from a backup at a later date also.

Hope this helps.

Here is a complete guide of How to install iPhone Themes:

If a theme is not available through the installer, you will have to add it manually yourself. First, you will need to use the installer.app and install OpenSSH on your iPhone.

You will then need to install WinSCP on your computer. Macs come with openssh but if you’d like some alternatives check here. To connect to WinSCP you will need to go into your settings on your iPhone into Wi-fi, click on the little arrow next to the Wi-Fi you are connected to and get the ip address. Now open WinSCP on your computer….the Host Name is your ip address (with the periods) the user name is root and the password is alpine. Don’t worry about the Private key file, you don’t need to put anything there. Hit login.

Once WinSCP opens, the themes go into the var/root/library/SummerBoard/Themes folder on 1.1.2 and lower and in the var/mobile/library/SummerBoard/Themes folder on 1.1.3 and above. . Once you are in that folder you will see all the themes that are on your iPhone. This is where you will want to add your new themes.

Create a folder somewhere on your computer that is the title of the theme you would like to add (ex…Chalkwork) then inside of the Chalkwork folder create another folder called Icons (with a capital “I”). Inside the Icons folder put all of the icon images that you would like to have. They must be named the same as the Title of the app, starting with a capital (Ex…Calendar, Customize, SummerBoard, Photos, Stocks….). You can also add a Dock and Wallpaper to the Chalkwork folder, they also need to be capitalized (do not put them in the Icons folder…just in the main Chalkwork folder). Once you have a folder of the theme with a folder of icons inside it you just drag the whole folder, Chalkwork, into Themes on WinSCP and hit Copy. Once it is done transferring you can go on your iPhone into SummerBoard and select the theme you just added. Note: your iPhone has to be on for the file to transfer!

If you are downloading a theme that is in a zip file…you will have to open the zip file and then create a folder on your computer that is the same name as the theme you are trying to download. Then copy the Icons folder from the zip file into the folder you created on your computer. This unzips the file so that you can add it to SummerBoard through WinSCP. You can also copy the wallpaper and dock out of the zip file into the file you created if you would like them too.

Note : this guide was taken from appleiphoneschool website and if you have any trouble using this guide you can contact the author at help@appleiphoneschool.com

The iPhone’s finger-driven interface seems natural and obvious. But when you really think about it, making it seem that way was no easy task. There are no menus in the iPhone software, for example, and no checkboxes or radio buttons. Everything on the screen has to be big enough for a fleshy fingertip.

On the other hand, the finger makes an outstanding pointing device; heck, you’ve been pointing with it all your life. It’s much faster to scroll diagonally with a fingertip, for example, than with fussy adjustments on two different scroll bars.

Here, then, are some of the iPhone’s unadvertised taps, double-taps, and other shortcuts, all culled from iPhone: The Missing Manual.

Double-Tapping

Double-tapping is actually pretty rare on the iPhone. It’s not like the Mac or Windows, where double-clicking the mouse means “open.” On the iPhone, you open something with one tap.

A double tap, therefore, is reserved for three functions:

* In Photos, Google Maps, and Safari (the Web browser), double-tapping zooms in on whatever you tap, magnifying it by a factor of two.

* In the same programs, as well as Mail, double-tapping means, “restore to original size” after you’ve zoomed in. (Weirdly, in Google Maps, you use a different gesture to zoom out: tap once with two fingers. That gesture appears nowhere else on the iPhone.)

*

David Pogue with his iPhone

When you’re watching a video, double-tapping eliminates or restores letterbox bars.

See, the iPhone’s screen is bright, vibrant, and stunningly sharp. It’s not, however, the right shape for videos.

Standard TV shows are squarish, not rectangular. So when you watch TV shows, you get black letterbox columns on either side of the picture.

Movies have the opposite problem. They’re too wide for the iPhone screen. So when you watch movies, you wind up with letterbox bars above and below the picture.

Some people are fine with that. At least when letterbox bars are onscreen, you know you’re seeing the complete composition of the scene the director intended.

Other people can’t stand letterbox bars. You’re already watching on a pretty small screen; why sacrifice some of that precious area to black bars?

That’s why the iPhone gives you a choice. If you double-tap the video as it plays, you zoom in, magnifying the image so that it fills the entire screen.

Part of the image is now off the screen; now you’re not seeing the entire composition originally broadcast. You lose the top and bottom of TV scenes, or the left and right edges of movie scenes.

If this effect winds up chopping off something important—some text on the screen, for example—restoring the original letterbox view is just another double-tap away.

Secrets of the Sensors

The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you’ve rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.

Camouflaged behind the black glass where you can’t see them except with a bright flashlight are two more sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the screen illumination and touch sensitivity when the phone is against your head (it works only in the Phone application), and an ambient-light sensor that brightens the display when you’re in sunlight and dims it in darker places.

Apple says that it experimented with having the light sensor active all the time, but it was weird to have the screen get brighter and darker all the time. So the sensor now samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once—each time you unlock the phone after waking it.

You can use that tip to your advantage. By covering up the sensor (just above the earpiece) as you unlock the phone, you force it to a low-power, dim screen-brightness setting (because the phone believes that it’s in a dark room). Or by holding it up to a light as you wake it, you get full brightness. In both cases, you’ve saved all the taps and navigation it would have taken you to find the manual brightness slider in Settings.

Earbud Cord Switch

Without close inspection, you’d have a hard time telling the iPhone’s white stereo earbuds apart from a regular iPod’s—but don’t get them mixed up. The iPhone’s earbuds have a tiny, embedded clicker/microphone partway down the right earbud cord.

That’s right, “clicker/microphone.” The tiny bulge is the microphone for phone calls. But if you pinch the bulge, you’ll find that it clicks.

* Pinch once to answer an incoming phone call. Pinch for a couple seconds to dump the call to voicemail. (You can also double-tap the Sleep/Wake switch on top of the iPhone to send the call to voicemail.)

* During music or video playback, pinch once to pause the music; pinch again to resume playback.

* During music playback, double-pinch to skip to the next song.

Customizing the iPod Buttons

The iPod module on the iPhone starts out with buttons along the bottom for summoning four lists: Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

But what about Albums? Genres? Composers?

They’re there, all right, but hidden; you have to tap More to see them.

But what if you use those lists more often than Artists or Songs? No problem: you can replace one of those starter buttons with a list of your own.

Tap More, and then tap the Edit button (upper-left corner). You arrive at the Configure screen. Here’s the complete list of music-and-video sorting lists: Albums, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Genres, Composers, Compilations, Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

To replace one of the four starter icons, use a finger to drag an icon from the top half of the screen downward, directly onto the existing icon you want to replace. It lights up to show the success of your drag.

When you release your finger, you’ll see that the new icon has replaced the old one. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.

Keyboard Speedups

Don’t bother using the Shift key to capitalize a new sentence. The iPhone does that capitalizing automatically.

Don’t put apostrophes in contractions, either; the iPhone will put those in for you, too.

Force Quit, Reset

The iPhone is pretty darned simple and stable, but it’s still a computer. In times of troubleshooting, these tips may come in handy:

* Force quit a program. Press and hold the Home button for six seconds to force-quit a program that seems to be stuck.

* Reset. If the entire iPhone locks up—it can happen—press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake switch for eight seconds. You’ll see the screen go black, and then the Apple logo appears as the iPhone reboots.

You got and iPhone, how about using it as a web server? You think it is impossible? Not really at least for Japanese iPhone users. Freebit, a Japanese company has developed a web server application for iPhone called ServersMan. Currently it’s Japanese version is available only from Japanese App store. English version will be available in march for iPhone and Windows Mobile.

There is a built-in application in iPhone 3G to play videos from Youtube but apart from this application, users are deprived of accessing any other web or desktop application powered with Flash. Adobe Flash is no doubt one of the best platform for delivering content rich & interactive web(as well desktop) applications. Now, a good news for iPhone users is that Apple and Adobe are working together to enable iPhones for Flash technology. According to Bloomberg:

Adobe Systems Inc. faces a challenge in creating a version of its Flash video software for Apple Inc.’s iPhone, Chief Executive Officer Shantanu Narayen said.

“It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating,” Narayen said today in a Bloomberg Television interview from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver.”

Though Adobe CEO points to difficulties faced by Adobe in this regard but one can hope that we will be using Flash enabled iPhones shortly. I wonder if this update is not bounded to next version of iPhone.

In this technology driven world still there are huge number of people who don’t know how to CLEAR RECENT DOCUMENTS in their Windows OS.

Anyway, if you are caught in such a situation you don’t need to worry thanks to Remote Desktop Sharing. You don’t need to come from New York to Bangkok to fix your friend’s minor computer problem. Off course you can’t cure his hardware or OS boot problems. There are number of applications for desktop sharing, even modern day operating systems like Windows, Mac & Linux have this capability built in with core OS programs. Generally these built in programs are a bit difficult to configure. Personally I prefer 3rd party programs like Crossloop & Teamviewer for this purpose. These two programs have give the use ease of accessing other PC remotely without any messy configuration. TeamViewer has a plus point for remote sharing from a Windows PC to Mac & It has an option of using a portable version without even installing it. On the other hand I personally feel CrossLoop is a lot more faster than TeamViewer. These programs can be downloaded from their respective sites.
Download CrossLoop
Download TeamViewer
The next step is tell your friend to download & install the same software as you did, share the access code & allow the incoming connect. That’s it, now you can control your friend’s PC & help him solving the problem he is facing.
