5 best media players that work across Windows, Linux & Mac
There are a lot of Media Players available now-a-days. The million dollar question is, which one is the best and supported by every major operating system? The answer is no that simple. The choice of a media player depends on certain factors like the format you use most is supported by it, interface, support of certain features like subtitles, sound effects etc. Today I am presenting a review of 5 different media players along their features, these players are trimmed to the list of players which work across popular operating systems i.e Windows, Linux & Mac.
1. VLC media player

VLC is not doubt one of the most used media player now-a-days. It can play variety of videos without any further codecs or plugins. VLC can be installed in almost every operating system. The official site state VLC player as:
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
2. Real Player

Sometime I feel this old horse never got going despite being free. Perhaps their premium version discrimination to free one never attracted common users. According to wikipedia:
RealPlayer (briefly known also as RealOne Player) is a proprietary cross-platform media player by RealNetworks that plays a number of multimedia formats including MP3, MPEG-4, QuickTime, Windows Media, and multiple versions of proprietary RealAudio and RealVideo formats.
3. MPlayer

Originally developed for Linux, MPlayer now supports every major operating system. It supports variety of media formats and additional format support can be enabled by installing 3rd party codecs. Wikipedia describes it as:
MPlayer is a free and open source media player. The program is available for all major operating systems, including Linux and other Unix-like systems, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Versions for OS/2, Syllable, AmigaOS and MorphOS are also available. The Windows version works, with some minor problems, also in DOS using HX DOS Extender. A port for DOS using DJGPP is also available. A version for the Wii Homebrew Channel has also emerged.
MPlayer supports a wide variety of media formats. In addition to its wide range of supported formats MPlayer can also save all streamed content to a file.
4. Songbird

5. CorePlayer

CorePlayer is an excellent media player that supports all major operating systems and video/audio formats but the biggest setback for this player is that it is not free.
